Small businesses are the foundation of our economy, yet formalizing a business through the tax code is a complicated process that many low-capitalized entrepreneurs postpone.

The goal of the Self-Employment Tax Initiative (SETI) is to advance the use of the tax code and “tax preparation day” as a way to scale-up the delivery of essential business development products and financial services to start-up and growing self-employed businesses.

SETI accomplishes this goal in three main ways:

• Working with local partners to develop new products and services that promote more effective delivery, outreach and sector- specific strategies to help low-income entrepreneurs formalize and build their businesses.
• Analyzing, developing and advocating for new federal and state public policies that use the tax code as a vehicle for welcoming and supporting startup business owners.
• Exploring the development of a broader movement, to include for-profit, nonprofit and public sector partners, to serve millions of start-up and growing self-employed businesses.
