
In the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the state of Louisiana has taken steps to make asset building a priority. The Louisiana Department of Social Services has embraced the concept of asset building, and is implementing programs that offer opportunities for asset building to low- and moderate-income residents.
Since 2006, SETI has awarded grants to 31 organizations in 22 states (in additon to the District of Columbia) that serve self-employed businesses. These organizations offer many critical products and services in addition to tax preparation such as business training and micro enterprise loans.
A number of organizations are important to helping understand self-employment taxation as a means to use the tax system as a way to develop direct support for start-up and low-income microbusinesses.
